A 24 inch mountain bike usually fits children around 130 to 150 cm tall. If your child is closer to 145 to 165 cm, a 26 inch model may be more appropriate. Final fit should consider height, leg length and overall riding confidence.
It can be if the bike exceeds the child’s height or skill level. A frame that is too large makes braking and turning harder. Your child should be able to stand over the frame comfortably and feel in control while riding.
The move usually happens when the 24 inch bike starts to feel cramped, both in height and handling. If your child is growing quickly and ready for longer, faster rides, moving up to 26 inch wheels may make sense.
Weight plays a bigger role than many parents expect. A lighter bike is easier to accelerate, climb with and manage on uneven terrain. Avoid overly heavy frames, especially for younger or less experienced riders.
Front suspension can improve comfort on rough trails, but it also increases weight. For light trail riding or gravel paths, a lighter bike with quality tires may provide better overall control than a heavy suspension setup.
