FAQ – BMX Brakes
Do I need brakes on a BMX?
In most countries a bicycle must have at least one working brake. Many riders use a rear U-Brake, some street riders go brakeless but that usually is not road legal.
Can I remove the brakes from my BMX?
Yes, but the bike may no longer meet legal requirements for road use. Brakeless setups make barspins and tailwhips easier since no cables are in the way.
What type of brakes are best for BMX?
Rear U-Brakes are the most common, light, easy to use and effective for park and dirt. Flat and street riders sometimes choose brakeless.
Can I install BMX brakes myself?
Yes, if your frame has brake mounts. You need hex keys, a brake cable and housing and a compatible brake.
How often should I replace BMX brake pads?
Replace when the compound is under around 1 mm or braking power drops. Check more often if you ride in wet or dusty conditions.
Does brake color affect performance?
No, the color is purely aesthetic. The model, pad compound and setup affect braking power.
Do BMX brakes need bleeding?
No, most BMX brakes are mechanical and use a standard cable. Bleeding applies only to hydraulic systems.
