FAQ – BMX Wheels
Which BMX wheel size should I choose, 20 inches or 18 inches?
Twenty inch wheels are the standard size for most BMX riders, teenagers and adults. Eighteen inch wheels work better for shorter riders and kids, roughly around 135 to 150 cm tall, because they are lighter and easier to control when learning tricks.
What is the difference between a cassette hub and a freecoaster?
Cassette hubs engage quickly and give the classic clicking sound when you coast. Freecoaster hubs let you roll backwards without pedalling, which is useful for street and flat tricks, but they have slack and are usually heavier. For technical street riding many riders choose a freecoaster, while for park and all round use a cassette hub is often the safer choice.
Ten millimetre or fourteen millimetre axle, which should I choose?
Most front BMX wheels use ten millimetre axles, while rear wheels often use fourteen millimetre axles because they are stronger for grinds and hard landings. Always check what axle size your frame and fork support and whether you plan to ride with pegs.
Thirty six hole or forty eight hole, which BMX wheel is stronger?
Forty eight hole wheels have more spokes and can handle heavy riders, big drops and frequent grinds, but they are a bit heavier. Thirty six hole wheels are lighter and still strong enough for most park and street riders, as long as the spokes are kept correctly tensioned.
Will any BMX wheel fit my frame and fork?
Not every wheel will fit every frame and fork. You need to check tyre clearance, rim width, axle type, ten or fourteen millimetres, and your brake setup. If you use U brakes, choose rims with a braking surface, or go brakeless with compatible frames and forks.
