FAQ – Most Frequently Asked Questions About BMX Pedals
Do BMX pedals have a universal thread?
Most BMX pedals use a 9/16 inch thread which fits modern 3 piece cranks. Some older or very basic bikes with 1 piece cranks use a 1/2 inch thread so check your crank before buying.
Should I choose plastic or metal pedals?
Both work well depending on how you ride.
- Plastic (nylon), lighter and smoother for grinds, great for street and skatepark.
- Metal (aluminum), stronger with sharper pins for maximum grip, ideal for dirt and trail riding.
Will any pedals fit my BMX bike?
If your crank uses a 9/16 inch thread then yes. This is the standard in almost all freestyle BMX bikes today. If you have a 1 piece crank you may need 1/2 inch pedals.
What are pins on BMX pedals?
Pins create grip between your shoe and the pedal. Plastic pedals use molded pins. Metal pedals use replaceable metal pins. More pins usually mean more grip but also a higher chance of hitting your shins if your foot slips.
Which pedals are best for street park or dirt?
- Street and Park, plastic pedals are light, smooth for grinds and offer enough grip.
- Dirt and Trails, aluminum pedals with metal pins give maximum hold and stability.
- Flatland, low profile pedals with controlled grip and very smooth rotation.
How do I install BMX pedals?
The left pedal has a left hand thread which tightens counterclockwise. The right pedal tightens clockwise. Use a 15 mm wrench or an Allen key depending on your pedal model and apply a bit of grease to the thread.
Why do my pedals come loose?
The most common reasons are mismatched thread size, not enough tightening force or lack of grease on the threads. In some cases worn crank arms or damaged pedal axles can also cause looseness.
