BMX handlebars are one of the most important parts of your bike, giving you control, balance and confidence during every jump, turn and trick.
Good bars can completely change how your BMX reacts. Whether you’re learning your first manuals or pushing bigger tricks, the right rise and width help you stay stable and move naturally with the bike.
Riders have different styles, body proportions and preferences, which is why BMX handlebars come in many shapes. Some bars are higher for a more upright, comfortable position. Others are wider for extra stability, especially in street riding. Stronger tubing also matters if you land heavy or ride spots every day.
If you’re unsure which handlebar fits your riding, we can help you compare rise, width, backsweep and upsweep so you get a setup that feels right from the very first session.
BMX Handlebars
Every handlebar has its own character. Width affects stability, rise changes your posture, and sweep angles decide how natural the bar feels in your hands. The most important point is compatibility — your handlebar must match the stem diameter used in freestyle BMX, usually 22.2 mm. Once you know these basics, choosing the right bar becomes much easier.

FAQ, BMX Handlebars
How do I choose the right handlebar height for my height?
Taller riders usually feel comfortable on bars around 8.75 to 10 inches, while shorter riders prefer 8 to 8.5 inches. Your frame size and riding style also affect what feels right, so treat these numbers as a helpful starting point rather than a strict rule.
What does BMX handlebar width really affect?
Width is measured from grip to grip and changes how the bike reacts. Wider bars offer more stability on landings and manuals, narrower ones give quicker steering. Most freestyle bars come between 27 and 30 inches, and riders simply pick what feels natural — we do not shorten handlebars in our workshop.
What are backsweep and upsweep on BMX handlebars?
Backsweep is the backward angle that affects wrist comfort during longer sessions. Upsweep lifts the grip area slightly and helps with control during hops and rotations. Different brands use different angles, so the best choice depends on your preference and how you ride.
What material should a freestyle BMX handlebar be made of?
Freestyle BMX handlebars should be made from 4130 chromoly steel. It absorbs impacts well, stays strong under heavy tricks and lasts much longer than aluminium, which is used mainly in race bikes.
Do BMX handlebars fit all stems?
No. The bar must match the stem clamp area. Most freestyle stems use 22.2 mm, while some oversized stems use 25.4 mm. Always check both measurements before buying so the parts fit safely.
Can I return or exchange handlebars if they don’t fit?
Yes. At RMDBike you can return or exchange unused handlebars within 365 days. If you are looking for a specific model, we can also check availability with our distributors.
