The crankset on a BMX bike plays a very important role.
It not only drives the bike forward but also supports your weight on the pedals during tricks. A BMX crankset must be strong and durable, which is why it’s made from high-quality steel.
Among BMX riders, crank arm lengths of 170–175 mm are the most popular. However, it depends on riding style and preference. For street riding, shorter arms are better because they give you more leg clearance. If you like riding fast, longer arms provide more stability. No matter the arm length, make sure your crankset is compatible with your BMX pedals.
FAQ – BMX Cranksets
What’s the difference between a 1-piece and a 3-piece BMX crankset?
A 1-piece crankset is made from a single piece of metal. It’s cheaper and found in entry-level BMX bikes. A 3-piece crankset has two separate arms and a bottom bracket spindle – it’s stiffer, lighter, and easier to service.
What does 2-piece and 2.5-piece mean in BMX cranksets?
A 2-piece crankset has one arm permanently attached to the spindle, while the other arm is separate. A 2.5-piece is similar to a 3-piece, but one arm is factory-joined to the spindle, which makes installation easier.
How do I choose the correct crank arm length for BMX?
The standard is 170–175 mm. Shorter arms are better for street and technical tricks, while longer arms work well for higher speeds and more stability.
Which pedals fit my BMX crankset?
Most 3-piece and 2-piece cranksets use the 9/16" thread. 1-piece cranks often have the smaller 1/2" thread. Always check the pedal description before buying.
Can I replace a BMX crankset myself?
Yes, if you have the right tools. For 3-piece cranks you’ll need an Allen key and sometimes a crank puller. For 1-piece cranks you’ll need a special nut wrench and a rubber mallet. If you’re not experienced, it’s better to visit a bike shop.
Is it worth upgrading from a 1-piece to a 3-piece crankset?
Yes, if you want a lighter, stiffer, and stronger setup. A 3-piece crankset also gives you more options for crank arm length and design.
