How to set up your skateboard before your first ride

So you’ve just bought a new skateboard online. Before you rush to the skatepark or try your first run on a ramp, take a few minutes to check your setup.

Whether it’s a regular skateboard or a longboard, always read the instructions and inspect the hardware before riding for the first time. It’s tempting to grab the board and go straight outside, but a quick check can help prevent injuries and avoid damaging your equipment.

Skateboarding is fun, but it’s still an action sport. Riding a board that hasn’t been checked can lead to accidents. Get into the habit of inspecting your setup regularly, not just before the first ride but before every session. Never ride a damaged board. For safety, always wear a helmet and protective gear.

Skateboard setup before your first ride

Most skateboards bought online arrive pre-assembled and technically ready to ride. Still, it’s worth checking a few things before your first session.

1. Check all bolts and nuts

   • You will need a basic tool to adjust your skateboard. A skate tool or socket wrench works best. If you don’t have one, you can find one here 👉 skateboard tools.
   • The bolts that attach the skateboard trucks to the deck should be tightened properly. Not too loose and not too tight. Loose hardware affects stability, while over-tightening can damage the deck.
   • Make sure the nuts holding the wheels on the trucks are adjusted correctly. The wheels should not wobble, but they also should not be tightened so much that they stop spinning freely.

2. Adjust truck tightness

   • Most beginner skateboards come with trucks set to a neutral factory setting. If it doesn’t feel right, you can easily adjust them.
   • Tighter trucks make the board more stable. Beginners often prefer this because it makes balancing easier.
   • Looser trucks allow the skateboard to turn more easily. Many experienced riders prefer this because it improves manoeuvrability.
   • Truck tightness is adjusted using the kingpin, the large bolt in the centre of the truck.
   • If trucks are tightened too much, the skateboard will barely turn.

3. Check the wheels and bearings

   • Spin each wheel and check that it rotates smoothly in both directions. There should be no resistance or unusual noises.
   • The wheels should be evenly tightened and properly seated on the axle. If something feels off, go back to step one and check the hardware again.

4. Inspect the deck and griptape

   • Look carefully at the deck and check for cracks or visible damage. Any structural issue can affect safety while riding.
   • The griptape, the sandpaper layer on top of the board, should be firmly attached. If it starts to peel, gently warm it with a hair dryer to reactivate the adhesive and press it back onto the deck.

If everything checks out, grab your board and head to the skatepark.
