The most common types are front hubs, rear cassette hubs, and freecoaster hubs. Each has a different design and engagement mechanism.
A cassette hub engages the drivetrain when you pedal forward and freewheels when you stop pedaling. A freecoaster also freewheels forward, but lets you roll backward without the pedals turning – perfect for fakie tricks.
