BMX Size Guide Find the Right Bike for Your Height and Age 0
BMX Size Guide Find the Right Bike for Your Height and Age. RMDBike.com Blog

Check out our cheat sheet: What size BMX should you buy?

Not sure which BMX size to choose? Use this guide to match the frame length and wheel size to your (or your child’s) height. The right BMX makes learning tricks easier and way more fun.

Quick size overview by rider height

  • 12" wheels – riders approx. 90–110 cm, the very first bike for young kids learning balance.
  • 14" wheels – riders approx. 110–125 cm, small but already a "real" BMX.
  • 16" wheels – kids approx. 120–135 cm, light and agile, great for first tricks in the skatepark.
  • 18" wheels – juniors approx. 135–150 cm, a transitional size when 16" is too small and 20" still too big.
  • 20" wheels – standard freestyle BMX for teens and adults from approx. 145 cm up. Available in multiple frame sizes (19.5–21") depending on rider height and style.

Recommended top-tube lengths (20" TT) by rider height

Top-tube length (TT) is the main parameter for comfort and control. Other factors like head tube angle and rear triangle also matter, but TT is the easiest reference for beginners.

  • 19.5"–20.25" TT: approx. 145–160 cm
  • 20"–20.5" TT: approx. 150–168 cm
  • 20.25"–20.75" TT: approx. 160–175 cm
  • 20.75"–21" TT: approx. 175–183 cm
  • 21"+ TT: approx. 180 cm and taller

Wheel sizes in short

12" BMX – the very first bike for young kids learning balance.

14" BMX – small, but already a "real" BMX, good for kids from 110 cm.

16" BMX – light and agile, great for starting out and learning first tricks in the skatepark.

18" BMX – a transitional size for growing riders, when 16" is too small and 20" is still too big.

20" BMX – the freestyle standard for teens and adults (street, park, dirt). Frames come in different TT lengths (19.5–21") to suit rider height and style.

FAQ – BMX sizes and beginner tips

How to choose between 12", 14", 16", 18" and 20" wheels?

Match by height: 90–110 cm (12"), 110–125 cm (14"), 120–135 cm (16"), 135–150 cm (18"), from 145 cm up (20"). If unsure, pick the size that gives control now, not one "to grow into".

Is a 16" BMX good for skateparks and tricks?

Yes. A 16" is light and easy to handle – ideal for first tricks and learning the basics in a park.

When should I switch from 16" to 18"?

Usually when the rider is close to 135 cm and the 16" feels too small. An 18" adds stability without the extra weight of a 20".

What height fits an 18" BMX?

Best for riders around 135–150 cm tall. It’s a transition stage before moving up to a full 20".

From what height is a 20" BMX suitable?

Roughly from 145 cm tall. This is the standard for teens and adults – choose top-tube (TT) length according to the chart.

What top-tube (TT) length should I choose for a 20" BMX?

~145–160 cm: 19.5"–20.25"; 150–168 cm: 20"–20.5"; 160–175 cm: 20.25"–20.75"; 175–183 cm: 20.75"–21"; 180 cm+: 21"+.

What’s better to start with: chromoly or aluminum?

Chromoly is stronger and more forgiving when learning tricks. Aluminum is lighter but mostly used in BMX racing, not freestyle.

Should kids wear helmets and pads?

Absolutely. A good helmet is essential, and knee, elbow, and wrist guards greatly reduce the risk of injury.

Do BMX bikes have gears?

No. Freestyle BMX is single-speed – simpler, stronger, and with less maintenance.

Should you buy a bigger bike "to grow into"?

Not recommended. A too-big BMX is harder to control and slows down learning tricks. Better to pick the right size for now.

What’s the difference between kids’ BMX and a city bike?

BMX is shorter, stronger, and built for tricks (street, park, dirt). A city bike is designed for comfortable riding, not stunts.
