BMX Pre‑Season Checklist. What to Check Before You Ride? 0

Feeling a bit bored…?

You feel like doing something, but not sure what???

Just get up, head to the garage (or wherever you keep your bike) and pull out your BMX!

Now it’s just a few routine checks before you can hit the park or the streets.

After a tough season, your BMX could use a full service, but let’s be honest – once you take it out, you’ll probably want to ride a bit before stripping it down or taking it to a professional bike shop. So, check these key points and get rolling!

Checklist: Things to Check on Your BMX Before the Season

1. BMX Tire Pressure

I always start with tire pressure. For BMX, it’s best to pump them up to the max to avoid pinch flats (snakebites 😉). You’ll find the recommended pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Tires are also one of the most commonly replaced BMX parts.

2. Checking for Play in Your BMX

Next, I always check for any looseness. Start with the handlebar – a quick check of the stem bolts, headset movement, and a small barspin to see if anything creaks or squeaks. Tighten bolts if needed.

Make sure the wheel is aligned with the handlebar. Check axle nuts so there are no surprises. Spin the wheel and listen for smooth, quiet rotation. If you hear grinding or feel roughness, the hub might need servicing – something best done with proper tools.

Crank play is also common. Dirt from the tires can get into the bottom bracket, making the bike feel unstable under your feet. Cleaning and tightening the cranks will help.

3. BMX Pedals

If your pedals fall off, you won’t get far. Make sure they’re tightened properly and still in good condition. Pedals take a lot of abuse in BMX because they bear your full weight.

4. BMX Chain

You can pedal all you want, but without a properly tensioned chain, you’ll only make it as far as your driveway. So check your BMX chain tension before riding.

5. BMX Grips

It might not seem important, but if your handlebar slips out of your hands mid-air, you’ll be in for a shock. Grips need to be in good condition and fit snugly. Check if your bar ends are still in place – if not, it might be time for new ones. Along with pedals and tires, grips and bar ends are among the most frequently replaced BMX parts.

Remember – it’s always best to take your bike to a professional bike shop in your area for a full check‑up.
