This table is RMDBike’s general sizing guide, informed by our fitting experience. The ranges are approximate, not the specifications of every bike in the category. Compare your height with the guide, then check the actual model’s geometry and fit before choosing.
Start with the rider’s height and the manufacturer’s fit guide. Wheel diameter helps you find a group of bikes, but it does not describe the frame’s length. A 20-inch BMX can fit an adult; a smaller-wheeled bike needs checking just as carefully for a child.
TT means top tube length: a frame measurement listed separately from wheel size. Compare it with the rest of the geometry and the maker’s sizing advice. Do not assume a 12-inch wheel means a 12-inch top tube, or transfer the measurements of one model to every bike in that size.
Look for a bike the child can start, steer and stop now. Check their reach to the controls and whether they can manage the bike’s weight. A larger model is not better value if they cannot control it yet. Practise the basics on flat, clear ground before moving to ramps.
RMDBike requires an initial service by a professional bicycle workshop before the first ride. Have the workshop complete or check the assembly and confirm that the bike is ready to ride. The workshop sets the service price. Keep confirmation of the work and follow the instructions and warranty documents supplied with your bike. Choose a properly fitting helmet approved for your activity and suitable protective pads. Follow the bike’s instructions and check it regularly, especially after a crash or heavy landing.
For more information, read Important Information Before Buying and Riding a BMX Bike.
Start with your child’s height, then compare the manufacturer’s guidance and the actual frame measurements. Wheel size and top tube length are different measurements. Check that your child can reach the bars, operate any fitted brakes and handle the bike comfortably. If possible, compare suitable bikes in person.
Compare the whole bike, including top tube length and geometry. A tall rider may prefer a longer 20-inch BMX or the feel of 22-inch wheels. There is no universal height at which everyone must switch. Use the manufacturer’s advice for the model and compare with a bike you know.
Check the specification of the exact model and year. A rear brake, front brake and gyro are separate items; mounts or holes for a gyro do not mean one is included. Before buying extra parts, confirm the frame, fork, brake and cable requirements for the setup you want.
Yes. RMDBike requires an initial service by a professional bicycle workshop before the first ride. A complete bike may still need assembly and adjustment after transport. Have the workshop check the finished bike and follow the instructions and warranty documents supplied with your model.
