Which protective pads should you choose?
For inline skating, roller skating and skateboarding, choose knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. For BMX and stunt scootering, look at knee and shin pads, along with elbow and ankle protection.
For MTB, choose knee and elbow pads, adding back and torso protection for demanding descents. When riding with handlebars, suitable gloves can help with grip and protect your hands from scrapes.
If you are starting out on inline skates, roller skates or a skateboard, a pad set is a practical way to get knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards together. Check the measurements for every part of the set, though. If the knee pads fit but the other pieces are too loose or too tight, choosing them separately may give you a better fit.
Soft pads or hard-shell pads?
Do you need something comfortable for hours of pedalling, or mainly for sessions on ramps? That matters more than how a pad looks.
On skate-style pads with a hard plastic cap, the cap covers the protective padding and allows sliding on suitable surfaces. Slimmer, flexible designs can be more comfortable under clothing and while pedalling. That does not mean every soft pad provides the same protection. Check the protective insert, coverage and intended use. Thickness alone, or the presence of a plastic cap, is not enough to compare protection.
Keep your pads in place
Constantly pulling your pads back up can spoil a session. Look at how they stay in place: a stretchy sleeve, adjustable straps or features that help prevent slipping. These features only work well when the pad fits your leg or arm properly.
Take measurements exactly where the manufacturer specifies. Two models labelled medium can fit differently. When your pads arrive, bend your knees and elbows several times and get into your riding position. Check that the protective padding still covers the right area. Tightening the straps harder will not necessarily fix a shape that does not suit you.
Under your trousers or over them?
If you want to wear pads under your trousers, check their profile and the room inside the trouser legs, including when your knees are bent. Tight trousers can press uncomfortably against even a correctly sized pad.
With pull-on pads, check whether you need to take your shoes off to put them on. A fully opening design can make it easier to get your pads on when you reach the spot. Check the product description: not every pad with straps opens all the way.
Shin strikes from pedals or a scooter deck?
On a BMX, a slipped pedal can strike your shin. On a stunt scooter, the deck can do the same during a missed tailwhip. Look at shin guards and compare how far the protective insert extends, including whether it covers just the front of your leg or the sides too.
For tricks that involve rotating a BMX frame or scooter deck, protection on the inside of the lower leg can also be useful. Check the construction of the particular model. A knee pad with a long fabric sleeve does not necessarily include shin protection.
Put together your protection at RMDBike
Choose a complete set or combine individual pads in different sizes and from different brands. This lets you fit each piece to your build and buy only what you need.
When comparing models at RMDBike, look closely at their coverage, protective inserts, how you put them on and the size charts. These are the differences you’ll notice when bending your knees, pedalling or trying to fit your pads under your trousers.
Check the condition of your pads and their fastenings before every session. Pads help protect against impacts and scrapes, but they cannot guarantee that you will avoid injury.
Questions about protective pads
How do I choose pads that will stay in place while riding?
Measure your arm or leg at the points shown in the manufacturer’s size guide. Once the pads are on, bend your arm or leg and check that the protective padding stays over the intended area. If a pad moves despite being fastened correctly, its size or shape may not suit you. Do not try to fix this by tightening the straps until they hurt.
Which MTB pads are comfortable to pedal in?
Look for models designed for riding that involves pedalling. Check how easily they flex with your knee bent, their ventilation and the material behind your leg, which can rub or bunch up as you move. The label “soft” is not enough to make the choice. Check the protective insert and intended use too, particularly if your rides combine climbs with demanding descents.
Can I wear BMX and stunt scooter pads under my trousers?
Yes, if the pad design and the room in your trouser legs allow it. Check the fit with your knees bent as well. Your trousers should not press the pads tightly against you or restrict movement. A slim pad is easier to fit under clothing, but it still needs to cover the area you want to protect. A long fabric sleeve does not mean that the protective insert extends over your shin.
