A 16-inch BMX gives younger children a way into BMX riding and learning the basics. A smaller bike that fits their height and reach can be easier to steer and control, helping them feel more comfortable as they learn.
16-inch BMX bikes bring freestyle design to a smaller size. Their sturdy frames, straightforward construction and geometry suited to younger riders make them suitable for learning bike-handling skills, trying first tricks and riding skateparks and pump tracks, within each model’s intended use.

RMDBike’s general guide is around 120–135 cm. Height and inside leg measurement are more useful than age alone. Check that your child can comfortably reach the handlebars and brake levers and control the bike’s weight.
A correctly fitted 16-inch BMX can be a good first freestyle bike for learning the basics and trying simple tricks. Compare the weight and geometry of individual models rather than assuming every bike with 16-inch wheels will feel the same.
A 16-inch BMX has smaller wheels and usually a more compact frame, making it better suited to smaller riders. An 18-inch BMX is the next size to consider when your child has outgrown their 16-inch bike. Check the fit of the individual model before moving up.
A 16-inch freestyle BMX can be used at skateparks and pump tracks within the model’s intended use. Start with features suited to your child’s ability, make sure the bike fits and follow the manufacturer’s riding and safety instructions.
Your child should wear a properly fitted helmet suitable for their riding. Knee and elbow pads are also worth considering, especially when learning new skills.
