It’s a versatile size that works well for children, teenagers and adults. With its sturdy construction and standard wheel size, a 20-inch BMX can serve you for many seasons of skatepark, street and ramp riding.

Which frame size should I choose for a 20-inch BMX?
If you’re unsure which frame size to choose, remember that you shouldn’t buy a BMX to grow into. An oversized bike will make riding and learning tricks harder.
Use the table below to match the top tube length (TT) to your height. A shorter frame can feel more manoeuvrable, while a longer frame can feel more stable. Handling also depends on the rest of the bike’s geometry.
| Rider height (approx.) | Wheel size (inches) | Top tube TT (inches) |
|---|---|---|
| 145–160 cm | 20” | 19.5”–20.25” |
| 150–168 cm | 20” | 20”–20.5” |
| 160–175 cm | 20” | 20.25”–20.75” |
| 175–183 cm | 20” | 20.75”–21” |
| 183+ cm | 20” | 21”+ |
This table is RMDBike’s approximate sizing guide. Check the geometry and manufacturer’s sizing advice for the model you choose.
Important before your first ride
BMX bikes are designed for demanding riding and tricks. Each model arrives around 90% assembled. The handlebars and pedals must be fitted, and an initial service carried out at a bicycle workshop before the first ride, in accordance with the warranty terms supplied with the bike. Follow the supplied assembly instructions. Regular maintenance and checks for play are essential for riding safely.

20-inch BMX bike FAQ
Is a 20-inch BMX suitable for beginners?
Yes, provided the bike fits the rider and suits the riding they want to learn. The 20-inch measurement refers to the wheels, not the frame size. Use the sizing table and the model’s guidance to choose a suitable top tube length, then start with basic bike control before attempting bigger tricks.
Which components should I look at when buying my first BMX?
Compare frame and fork materials, wheel construction, cranks, bearings and the supplied brake setup. Look at the complete specification and intended use, rather than choosing by one standout part. Check the front and rear rim specifications separately: they are not always the same.
Can a cheaper BMX handle learning tricks?
Price alone cannot tell you that. Check the exact model’s intended use and components, and choose a bike suitable for the tricks you want to learn. No price point guarantees that parts will withstand every landing. A correctly assembled bike still needs regular checks and maintenance.
Which matters more on a BMX: frame geometry or component quality?
Both matter. A well-equipped bike with a frame that does not fit can still be hard to control. Start with suitable frame dimensions and geometry, then compare whether the fork, wheels and drivetrain suit the riding you plan to do.
Does a BMX need frequent servicing?
Check the tyres, brakes, chain and fastenings before each ride, and inspect the bike after a crash or heavy landing. Workshop service intervals depend on the manufacturer’s instructions, riding conditions and how much you ride. Regular checks are needed alongside workshop servicing.
What should I do if my BMX starts creaking or develops play after a few rides?
Stop riding if you notice play or suspect damage. Have the source checked and any necessary adjustment carried out before riding again. Do not dismiss persistent noises or looseness as normal. Follow the specified torque settings rather than simply tightening every bolt.
